A mounting unit is a device based on a wheel with a trough or groove around the circumference of a circle. The wheel is freely fastened on the axle and fixed on both sides with holders or "cheeks". A flexible component, such as rope, cable or chain laid in a groove, serves to transfer traction and fasten a cargo to be transported.

According to the established terminology, all blocks involved in rigging works are called "mounting units". Within this group, devices are divided into cargo-handling and draw-off types.

• Cargo-handling devices are used to reduce the traction force required to lift and move cargos in space. They are also called "pulley blocks".
• Draw-off devices are used to change the movement direction of a cable, chain or rope. As a rule, rigging components of this type have a smaller roller diameter and are statically fastened as the load applied to them is considerably smaller than that applied to cargo-handling units. Alternatively, draw-off units are called "snatch blocks".

An important characteristic of this device is the diameter of a working cable or rope laid in a groove. This parameter is always specified in the list of main specifications.

Depending on the complexity of works, the lifting system can be equipped with both single-rolled and multi-rolled units. In a structure where more than one roller is used, each such component is separated from the remaining ones with a "cheek" or plate and is capable of independently rotating in both directions.

Pulley blocks based on mounting units
