Crane grabs

Situations where crane units are designed and used exclusively for one type of cargos are quite rare. Each lifting machine is theoretically capable of working with many categories of cargos and materials, so you just have to install a required crane grab.

Crane grabs are mechanisms connecting a required cargo directly to main working crane components.

Classification

All such devices are divided into two classes: universal and specialized.

Universal devices include traverse beams, eyelets, slings and hooks used with a wide range of cargos notable for different physical properties and technical characteristics. These crane grabs are also used as composite elements in more complex and specialized structures. Their distinctive feature is that they are relatively easy to manufacture and use.

Specialized grabs are more structurally complex and are designed for a specific type of cargos.

Such devices include:

1. Those intended for standard-shaped cargos:

• tongs-type and lever-type grabs are used in handling operations with barrels, construction panels, boxes, rolls, sheet materials, etc.;
• devices operating according to the principle of electromagnet for metal products;
• vacuum devices designed for flat materials with even surfaces;
• tilters designed for cylinder-shaped objects and facilitating changes in their location in space for reliable stacking;
• rotatory legs and grabs of fork design for certain cargos, such as boxes, metal sheets, typical construction panels.

2. Container-type crane grabs (spreaders).

3. Devices designed to move loose goods (grab buckets).

Crane grabs are also divided according to the type of drive: driveless ones with mandatory manual slinging and unslinging; semi-automatic ones where one of the operations takes place in manual mode; and, finally, fully automatic ones where no slingsmen are required.

Widespread types of crane equipment

Some models of crane fixtures have become more common because of their versatility, simplicity and technological effectiveness.

For example:

• Hooks or hook suspensions. One of the simplest types of crane grabs along with slings is often an element of more complex hinged and lifting structures.
• Grab buckets are leaf-type buckets designed for loose materials of different fractions. The main difference between the devices included in this group is the number of jaws. Two-leaf grab buckets are used for small- and medium-fractioned loose materials, while multi-leg crane grabs are suitable for lifting and carrying large pieces and elements, such as metal scrap, construction waste, etc.
• Tongs-type and lever-type grabs. The original structure of these devices makes them irreplaceable when working with single-piece uniform loads. The shape of tongs or levers can be made in a wide range of variants, but the principle according to which this mechanism operates remains unchanged: legs tightened with a cable and connected to each other with a single-piece axle fasten a cargo when the cable is pulled for lifting and is released when the force becomes weaker.
