Magnetic starters

A special mechanism known as magnetic starter is used to monitor and connect/disconnect the electric motor to/from the network. It ensures high-quality operation and protects against sharp load jumps.

Special aspects related to magnetic starters

The magnetic starter's internal parts include:

• a core;
• an anchor with fixed plates;
• a base.

Contact pieces are connected to the network and the motor. The magnetic starter's operation principle is quite simple:

• when power is on, the anchor is in contact with the core and turns on the motor;
• after power is turned off, the spring pushes the anchor away and the motor is switched off.

The main indicators of functionality are as follows:

• maximum permissible current and voltage in the primary network;
• tension of the pulling coil;
• commutation wear resistance;
• maximum current of auxiliary contacts;
• power of the pulling coil.

When buying a magnetic starter, all these factors must be taken into account so as not to make a wrong choice. It should be understood that the price of magnetic starters depends on their structure and design. But it is not reasonable to think about economy in this case because the more reliable the device is, the better protection it provides to the electric motor.

Types of magnetic starters

In addition to the on-off function, magnetic starters are capable of changing the order of phases, allowing the rotor to rotate in both directions. A special magnetic reversing starter is used for this purpose.

Besides, starters are divided into:

• open and closed (in a protective case);
• with and without overload protection.

Today, manufacturers also offer such devices in their standard or special versions.

To ensure reliable motor operation, the PML magnetic starters and similar models are widely used today:

• PML starters are suitable for asynchronous motors and resistant to wear and tear and external effects;
• PME starters are used with asynchronous motors. They are characterized by high wear resistance and environmental protection. There are reversing-type and standard models;
• PM12 starters are designed for stationary equipment and ensure remote electric motor starting.

These devices perform the following tasks:

• distributing and controlling start-up and acceleration;
• ensure stable operation at a rated speed.

The most important thing is that they shut down the motor and protect it from overloads.
